KENYA READY TO MAKE HISTORY AS HSBC SEVENS

The government has rallied the nation to embrace a historic moment as Kenya hosts the HSBC SVNS Division 2 Nairobi Leg this weekend at the Nyayo National Stadium from February 14-15, 2026. “Kenya is proud to host the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Division 2 Nairobi Leg at Nyayo National Stadium on 14th and 15th February 2026, a historic milestone that elevates Kenya’s global sporting profile,” CS Salim Mvurya. The two-day tournament will bring together 12 elite teams, six men’s and six women’s sides from 11 countries, underscoring the international prestige of the event. Kenya becomes only the second African nation, after South Africa, to host a leg of the World Rugby Sevens series, a development the CS termed a strong endorsement of the country’s organizational capacity. “On behalf of the Government of Kenya, I warmly welcome the 12 elite international teams who have arrived in Nairobi for this thrilling continental showcase,” he stated, adding that the event affirms Kenya’s growing stature as a hub for sports tourism and global engagement. The women’s competition features Kenya Lionesses alongside Brazil, South Africa, China, Argentina, and Spain. In the men’s category, Kenya Shujaa will face off against Germany, the USA, Uruguay, Canada, and Belgium. The Lionesses open their campaign against Brazil at 9:44 AM, while Shujaa face Canada at 10:50 AM in their first pool match. The CS expressed confidence in the national teams, citing their strong pedigree on the continental and global stage. “Our national teams, the Kenya Sevens Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses, stand ready to compete with passion and pride, building on Kenya’s remarkable legacy of multiple Africa Sevens titles and consistent podium finishes.” With all tickets sold out and comprehensive live television coverage secured, anticipation for the Nairobi leg has reached fever pitch. The Ministry, through its whole-of-government approach, has put in place robust security and traffic management plans to ensure fans enjoy a safe and seamless experience.
