GOVERNMENT TO UPGRADE THIKA STADIUM TO MODERN STANDARDS
The government has finalized plans for the upgrade of Thika Stadium to a modern facility for a sum of KSh850 million, aimed at promoting talent development within the region.
The refurbished facility will feature new playing turf, modern changing rooms, a swimming pool, basketball courts, improved spectator terraces, floodlights, and other supporting amenities designed to enhance both competitive and community sports.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports CS Salim Mvurya said the stadium will have a seating capacity of 10,000 and is scheduled for completion within nine months.
“This project is part of the government’s broader commitment to expanding and modernising sports infrastructure across the country. The Thika stadium will provide a critical platform for nurturing young talent and growing sports in Kiambu County,” Mvurya said.
He added that the facility will play a strategic role in preparations for the African Cup of Nations, noting that Thika’s proximity to Nairobi makes it a suitable venue for some matches.
“Given its location near Nairobi, this stadium will be instrumental in supporting the hosting of AFCON 2027. Some games can be staged here, helping to ease pressure on the main venues while spreading the benefits of the tournament,” he said.
Mvurya noted that the Thika stadium will complement other key facilities within Kiambu County, including Kirigiti Stadium and Gatundu Stadium, strengthening the county’s sports ecosystem and decentralising access to quality venues.
Defence CS Soipan Tuya said the project highlights the whole of government’s collaborative approach to national development, revealing that the Kenya Defence Forces will partner with the sports ministry in construction and technical works.
“The Kenya Defence Forces will provide technical expertise and support to ensure the stadium meets the required standards. This partnership demonstrates how government institutions can work together to deliver impactful projects,” Tuya said.
She further announced that local residents will be prioritised for employment opportunities arising from the construction, particularly in small-scale and support roles.
Leaders present, led by Thika MP Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a, welcomed the initiative, saying the modernised stadium is expected to enhance talent identification, promote community engagement, and position Thika as a growing sporting hub.
